Make Your Voice Heard: Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Financial Responsibility Program

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is seeking public comment on the Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking as part of the procedures for the BOP’s Inmate Financial Responsibility Program (IFRP).

The BOP is proposing several changes to their IFRP. Some of these include a one-time payment toward debt if a person enters BOP custody with a commissary account of more than $250, taking 10% of the pay from any job done in prison, and taking a portion of money sent in from outside. Many of these changes are based on assumptions about the cost of obtaining basic human needs to survive while in custody.

As individuals and organizations impacted by the criminal legal system, our voices are needed to elevate how these changes can harm economic mobility.
