In July 2024, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took steps to put money back in the pockets of individuals who are incarcerated and their loved ones by implementing the 2022 Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act. However, this week, the FCC announced it will delay enforcement of the Martha Wright-Reed Act until 2027—a serious setback for incarcerated people and the families who support them.
This move is a blatant disregard for the law and the will of the American people. For too long, families have struggled to stay in touch with loved ones and, in many instances, have to make hard choices between talking with loved ones and paying the bills.
Our community has waited long enough. This delay contradicts the unanimous will of Congress and the FCC’s own decision last year. The infrastructure exists, and the need is urgent. Delaying enforcement benefits those that have long profited from this system—at the expense of families. This delay harms the very people the law was intended to support.
