In May, the House passed their “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB) by a single vote. Now the Senate is working to release their own version of the text as soon as this Friday—potentially triggering high-stakes negotiations with the House tied to the debt ceiling. The decisions made in the coming weeks will directly affect millions, especially those facing poverty, reentry, and systemic barriers.
What makes this bill so dangerous? This isn’t just a budget bill—it’s an attack on working people, public services, and civil rights. If passed, it will disproportionately harm communities already struggling. The supports needed for successful reentry are in immediate jeopardy. At its core, the current version of OBBB will:
- Deliver huge tax breaks to the wealthiest—giving the top 0.1% an extra $300,000+ per year—while slashing vital programs. Those earning under $17,000 would lose up to $1,000 annually.
- Trigger billions in automatic Medicare cuts over 10 years unless Congress intervenes.
- Push 11 million people—including millions of children—off SNAP. Future cost-of-living increases would be halted, even as food prices climb.
The Senate can still change the course, and now is the time to act. Contact your Senator and sign on to the JCC’s letter below!
